A new 30-second character PV trailer from My Master Has No Tail has been released, previewing rakugo master Utaroku Ebisuya (voiced by Akira Ishida). While he’s filled with more gloom and smoke off the stage, he’s well known for his rich, expressive actions during his performances. 

The anime series will premiere on September 30, 2022. Previous character trailers for Mameda, Bunko Daikokutei, Shirara Tsubaki, and Enshi Kirino have also been released. 

The voice cast for My Master Has No Tail includes M.A.O as Mameda, Hibiku Yamamura as Bunko Daikokutei, Lynn as Shirara Tsubaki, Takuya Eguchi as Tsubaki Byakudanji, Ayana Taketatsu as Enshi Kirino, Akira Ishida as Utaroku Ebisuya, Junichi Suwabe as Buncho Daikokutei, Ayumu Murase as Sakujiro, Natsuki Aikawa as Omatsu, Ikumi Hasegawa as Koito, and Yuuichirou Umehara as Rakuda.  

The anime is based on the “Taisho rakugo fantasy” manga series by TNSK, which was first serialized in Kodansha’s Good! Afternoon magazine on January 7, 2019. It is published under the Afternoon KC label and eight tankoubon volumes have been released in total so far. 

The production staff includes Hideyo Yamamoto (Cells at Work! BLACK) as director, Touko Machida (PuraOre! Pride of Orange) as series composer and one of the screenwriters, Haruka Yamauchi (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato co-sub character designer) as character designer, and Arte Refact’s Tsukasa Yatoki, Atsushi Harada, and Yuuki Honda as music composers. Liden Films is handling the animation production. 

Kodansha USA releases the manga in English for North America. It describes the story as:

Mameda is a tanuki who was born in the wrong era – all she wants is to trick humans, but that age of tanuki shenanigans is over. But one woman, a rakugo master named Bunko, shows Mameda it’s still possible to cast magic on humans…only with words, not illusions. Mameda is determined to become Bunko’s apprentice, but can she convince the stoic master to take her on…?
