A week before his 14th season is set to begin, Adrian Peterson is looking for a new home.

The Washington Football Team is releasing the veteran running back, NFL Network reported Friday morning.

Rookie Antonio Gibson has emerged as a threat in the backfield and is likely on top of the Washington depth chart that also includes former Heisman Trophy finalist Bryce Love, J.D. McKissic and Peyton Barber, making Peterson expendable.

The 35-year-old Peterson — the second-oldest active running back, behind only the Jets’ Frank Gore — still intends to keep playing. In his two years in Washington, starting 31 games, he rushed for 1,940 yards and 12 touchdowns, defying the recent trend of running backs having a short shelf life in the NFL.

Peterson currently sits fifth on the all-time leading rushing yards list with 14,216. Barry Sanders is next in fourth with 15,269 yards.

Washington had released running back Derrius Guice in August, seemingly putting Peterson in line to maintain the starting job under new head coach Ron Rivera. But Gibson, the third-round pick out of Memphis, has reportedly stood out in camp and appears to be ready for the bigger role in a changing of guard.
