#TikTok’s ‘Ratatouille’ musical coming to life for one night only

#TikTok’s ‘Ratatouille’ musical coming to life for one night only

A Broadway production company is turning this TikTok dream into a reality.

In August, a New Yorker Emily Jacobsen posted a clip of her love ballad on TikTok for the protagonist of Disney’s 2007 film “Ratatouille,” which quickly went viral on the platform, attracting a legion of fans eager to offer their skills in creating a Broadway musical adaption of the animated movie.

Now, Seaview — the production company behind Broadway shows including “Slave Play,” and “Sea Wall/A Life” — is collaborating on the concept and creating a one-night-only streaming event and New Year’s Day benefit called “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical,” Deadline reported.

“Finding new outlets for creative collaboration has never been more imperative than it is right now,” said Seaview CEO Greg Nobile in a statement about the decision to turn a social media-born meme about a singing rat into a streaming event, which will be available for 72 hours. “We can’t wait to share what these remarkable creators have dreamt up which will now allow them to benefit other artists.”

In keeping with the animated movie’s French origins — and the inane TikTok humor surrounding it — he also plugged the statement into Google Translate and released the French translation spat out by the software.

Details regarding the scope of characters, songs and cast members have not yet been announced. Tickets, already available, cost $5 to $50, with proceeds going to The Actors Fund.

“In Fall 2020, Broadway fans came together on TikTok in an unprecedented collaboration to create a new musical based on the beloved Disney film Ratatouille,” reads the description on the ticket-purchasing website. “On January 1, 2021, Broadway will say bon appetit with a big Broadway feast!” it goes on, before inviting fans to join “Broadway’s biggest and brightest talents along with some of the most celebrated TikTok creators for a singular special event.”
