#The Cure’s Longtime Bassist Simon Gallup Says He’s Leaving the Band

Simon Gallup, longtime bassist for the Cure, says that he is leaving the group, as Rolling Stone and CNN note. Gallup broke the news in a public Facebook post on Saturday, August 14. “With a slightly heavy heart I am no longer a member of the Cure!” he wrote. “Good luck to them all .…” As Rolling Stone also points out, when Gallup was asked in the comments if his departure was health-related, he responded, “I’m ok… just got fed up of betrayal.”

Pitchfork has reached out to representatives for lead singer Robert Smith for comment and more information.

Simon Gallup joined the Cure after founding bassist Michael Dempsey left in 1979. The group had just released its debut album, Three Imaginary Boys, which featured Dempsey’s last recordings with the band. Gallup played bass on the Cure’s next three full-lengths: Seventeen Seconds (1980), Faith (1981), and Pornography (1982). He then quit after tensions grew within the group, before returning in 1984. Gallup’s tenure with the Cure spanned over three decades. He was among the members of the Cure who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
