#The Boy and the Heron To Have US Premiere at 61st New York Film Festival

Hayao Miyazaki‘s The Boy and the Heron (How Do You Live?/Kimitachi ha Dou Ikiru ka) will have its US premiere at the 61st New York Film Festival, which runs from September 29 to October 15, as part of its Spotlight lineup. The movie’s plot and a still were also revealed.

Here’s the movie’s synopsis:

While the Second World War rages, the teenage Mahito, haunted by his mother’s tragic death, is relocated from Tokyo to the serene rural home of his new stepmother; as he tries to adjust, this strange new world grows even stranger. The first film in a decade from Hayao Miyazaki is a ravishing, endlessly inventive fantasy that is destined to be ranked with the legendary animator’s finest, boldest works.

The Boy and the Heron debuted in Japan on July 14 and will have its international premiere on September 7 at the Toronto International Film Festival 2023. In Japan, the Studio Ghibli-produced film has grossed 6.235 billion yen (~US$42.66 million) as of August 14.

The Boy and the Heron‘s Japanese title is taken from the 1937 novel (published in English in 2021) by Genzaburou Yoshino, which is a favorite of Miyazaki’s. The movie received little in the way of promotional material and information prior to its premiere in Japan.
