The anime “TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You” belongs to the ranks of “Crunchyroll Originals” and was published by the studio in 2020 Seven Arcs (including «Arte»). The second season of the series is now in the starting blocks, which is scheduled to be broadcast on Japanese television from April 2023. My opinion on the anime:

If I had to describe «TONIKAWA» in just one word, it would probably be “cuddly”. The anime is a real feel-good firework and knows exactly how to bring the butterflies in the protagonists’ stomachs closer to its viewers. The beginning of the anime is particularly special. Experienced rom-com viewers should have internalized the course of most representatives of this genre recently: The majority of the series is about slow approaches between the budding lovers, which are often the result of misunderstandings be hailed. When they get together at the end, the series is unfortunately already over. “TONIKAWA” uses a completely different strategy here: how about the protagonists getting married right at the beginning of the series?

What sounds like a pretty crazy idea, it is – and the protagonists as well as the viewer have to get used to it first. This is where the anime shows its clear strength, namely the sugar-sweet interactions between Nasa and Tsukasa as a newly married couple. Blushing is the order of the day here, and yet as the series progresses the relationship progresses beyond the initially awkward stage. The series is primarily about everything that goes with being a married couple, such as the question of a ring or the obligatory introduction to the parents. The side cast of «TONIKAWA» is more in line with the typical anime style, such as the stubborn Chitose from a rich family or her maids, and provides the comedy element of the title.

Overall, I would also recommend the anime to viewers who don’t tend to focus on rom-coms. «TONIKAWA» is a lot more purposeful and ultimately also more satisfying than other genre colleagues, which might appeal to those who are put off by romantic developments at a snail’s pace. The first season of the series is available on Crunchyroll with both German dubbing and an original subtitles.
