Last year when the COVID pandemic hit us, a lot of things changed all over the world. The gaming scenario was also affected, and with it, the gaming industry. As most things became a do-at-home thing, so did all aspects of gaming. Sony, at the time, responded with a Play At Home Initiative.

Jim Ryan, the CEO of PlayStation, revealed that the Play At Home Initiative had given away over 600 million games during the lockdowns! The initiative was first launched in April 2020 as a competing strategy with free giveaways by Epic Games. The initiative allowed players to download and install some high-quality PS exclusive games for a limited period of time.

Jim Ryan told GamesIndustry in an interview that it felt like “a nice thing to do.”

The initiative began with players getting free access to Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey. As time went on and the lockdowns continued in various regions, PlayStation launched the second phase of the initiative that was split into three parts.

The first part included the free version of Ratchet and Clank and a 3-month free membership to Funimation and Wakanim. The second part included ten PS VR titles and indie games. The third part included several add-ons and in-game content for a number of games.

Some of the titles featured in the Play At Home Initiative are Horizon” Zero Dawn, Ratchet and Clank, BNA 2K21, and Brawlhalla which became an obvious hit, allowing players to experience these games.
It has been said that over the two phases of the initiative, players around the world have redeemed over 600 million free games! Among them, 30 million games indie games, 11 million were PS VR titles, and 4 million were part of the add-ons and in-game content.
