#Our opinion on «Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero»

“Our opinion on «Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero»

Kamehameha: The new «Dragon Ball» evening filler «Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero» has been running in German-language cinemas for a few days. You can read here whether we liked the latest offshoot of the screen about Son Goku and Co.!

Trailer:

This is what the movie is about:

The Red Ribbon Army was once wiped out by Son Goku. But someone lets their spirit live on and created the ultimate cyborgs with Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. These two cyborgs call themselves “superheroes” and start attacking Piccolo and Son Gohan… What is the goal of the new Red Ribbon army? With danger looming, it’s time for the superheroes to wake up!

Moritz

After the two worth seeing predecessors “Dragonball Z: Resurrection ‘F'” and “Dragonball Super: Broly” I was very excited about the latest film offshoot. However, the trailer at the time gave me a first setback: the 3D animation took a lot of getting used to and divided fans online. First of all: once you get used to the animation, it doesn’t have a negative impact. On the contrary: especially in the second half, «Super Hero» flexes its muscles and has impressed me again and again. Whether the new animation style bothers you or not is up to the viewer. Personally, I still favor 2D animation, but I really got used to the new look.

Slice-of-Life statt Genkidama

In general, the latest flick takes things a little more slowly than its two bombastic predecessors. Brute action and bursting attacks are not to be found in the first half of the film. Instead, «Super Hero» focuses heavily on its characters and their interpersonal relationships. The training of Piccolo and Gohan’s daughter Pan, for example, reminds veterans of the beginnings of the series. Instead of raging battles, we primarily follow the everyday lives of our heroes. Anyone who has grown fond of the characters by now will have a lot of fun with them. Especially due to the amount of slapstick humor that characterizes the series (and is also abundantly represented here), “Super Hero” is sometimes even reminiscent of the wonderfully quirky “driver’s license episode” from the original series. While pacing initially suffers from this decision, it’s only a minor evil…

courage to take risks

…because «Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero» is wonderfully refreshing. The film does not focus on the Saiyajins Son Goku and Vegeta, as is usual, but on Son Gohan and Piccolo. Anyone who found the father-son relationship between the two lovable characters to be one of the great strengths of the series will get their money’s worth here. So it doesn’t bother that Goku and Vegeta prefer to spend their time training with the God of Destruction and only scurry across the screen for a short time. The film knows how to appropriately stage both the green devil and the work-plagued father Son Gohan. As in «Dragon Ball Z», their father-son relationship is at the heart of the film.

The two antagonists Gamma #1 and #2 are similarly refreshing. These are not only wonderfully likeable, but also not as one-dimensional as some other villains of the (film) series. The charismatic grandson Dr. Hedo (the grandson of the infamous Dr. Gero) successfully rounds off the new cast.

The only downside: in the German dubbing, instead of David Nathan, Felix Spieß speaks the role of Piccolo. It does its job extremely well, but it doesn’t come close to the congenial performance of its predecessor. Tommy Morgenstern, who as Goku only plays a marginal role in comparison, seems almost wasted here.

New forms and old acquaintances

For those who were looking forward to the film because of the tremendous action, you will have to be patient, but you will finally get your money’s worth. At the latest in the final showdown, no stone is left unturned and one curious action sequence follows the next. Although «Super Hero» will never be as strong as the action in the predecessor «Broly», it scores in other ways. The finale not only trumps with some new explosive forms that make fan hearts beat faster, but also surprises with old (well known) faces. But I don’t want to reveal too much at this point…

Conclusion:

The latest coup from the pen of creator Akira Toriayama shifts down a gear in many respects compared to its predecessors, but it is still worth seeing. Especially fans of Piccolo and Son Gohan should not miss this film because of their increased focus! Even if the animation should divide minds: “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” is a lot of fun! Even without Son Goku and Vegeta.
