“One Piece Manga Surpasses a Historic 500 Million Copies Around the World”

One Piece

One Piece continues to make manga history today, announcing that the series has surpassed 500 million copies printed (physically) and sold (digitally) around the world, becoming the first manga series to ever do so, the first comic to do so from a single author and the second book series to mark this milestone from a single author. The official One Piece Twitter account announced the news today as the 103rd volume of the series was released in Japan, taking into account the 3 million copies in the first print run for the volume.

A promotional title for One Piece‘s volume 103 was also released titled “Tsui ni Gear 5 (Finally, Gear 5).” Massive spoiler warning for anime-only watchers.

To break down that over “500 million copies” number, over 410 million copies that have been printed (physically) and sold (digitally) come from Japan, making it the highest-selling manga of all time from just its own country, and then over 100 million copies from around the world in over 60 countries and regions. This means that One Piece has actually printed (physically) and sold (digitally) 510 million copies across the globe.

Additionally, Eiichiro Oda’s “Comic Book Series with the Most Copies Published by a Single Author” Guinness World Record has been updated with the latest Japanese physical release numbers of 416,566,000 copies as of July 2022. Oda was given a new certificate for this award, which can be seen in the image below featuring Weekly Shonen Jump Editor in Cheif Hiroyuki Nakano. Oda also holds the Guinness World Record for “Most Copies Published for the Same Manga Series.”

One Piece keeps celebrating its massive year with the release of its next anime film One Piece Film: Red in theaters in Japan on August 6. Crunchyroll, who’ll be releasing the film internationally across the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand sometime this fall, describes the seafaring musical adventure as such:

Uta —the most beloved singer in the world. Renowned for concealing her own identity when performing, her voice has come to be described as “otherworldly.” Now, for the first time ever, Uta will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans—excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound. The story begins with the shocking fact that she is Shanks’ daughter.

The One Piece TV anime is also still going strong, with over 1,000 episodes of the series streaming right here on Crunchyroll, with new episodes coming out as they air in Japan.
