The memories will have to suffice.

The tapes for the majority of the wildly popular “Mike and the Mad Dog” radio show on WFAN were previously destroyed, Mike Francesa revealed on Friday. Francesa and Chris Russo joined up in 1989 and stayed together until August of 2008, but the tapes from 1989 through 2002 are gone.

“The first year when they had so much, they sent it to a place and a lot of it was stored and destroyed by accident,” he said on the air, referring to the days before hours of radio were stored digitally. “They had a massive amount of storage space to store all this stuff. Most of the stuff is pretty much after 2002 right up until ‘Dog’ left.”

The good news is not all the tapes are gone. But two-thirds of it will sadly never be heard unfortunately. At least there is the ESPN 30-for-30 documentary on Francesa and Russo fans can always relive.
