#Gio Urshela added to Yankees’ infinite list of injury worries

In a baseball season that has been anything but normal there has been a routine with the Yankees: another player with an injury.

Third baseman Gio Urshela has a bone spur in the right elbow and was replaced in the starting lineup for the first game of Friday’s Subway Series doubleheader by Miguel Andujar.

“He is day to day and actually felt he could play (Friday),’’ manager Aaron Boone said of Urshela, who like too many of his teammates is in a slump. In his last 11 games he is batting .128 (5-for-39) with a .512 OPS. “I’ll probably try and stay away from him (Friday) and see where we are at (Saturday). Don’t think it is a long-term thing but he is probably going to need a day (off) at least.’’

These days a player who goes for tests and doesn’t land on the injured list is viewed as a plus for the Yankees, who put Aaron Judge back on the IL with a calf problem that could shelve him anywhere from three-to-six weeks. If it is six Judge would be out for the remainder of the regular season and the start of the postseason.

Others on the IL are Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring), Zack Britton (hamstring), Gleyber Torres (hamstring and quadriceps), DJ LeMahieu (left thumb) and James Paxton (forearm flexor). LeMahieu was scheduled to face live pitching at the alternate site in Scranton on Friday and could possibly return for Sunday’s doubleheader at Yankee Stadium.

Should Urshela require more than a day or two of rest the Yankees have Andujar, Tyler Wade, currently their shortstop, and Jordy Mercer, who they recalled from the alternate site Friday. Mercer is primarily a shortstop.

To make room on the roster for the 34-year-old Mercer, the Yankees released lefty reliever Luis Avilan who was on the Il with a shoulder problem. Boone said the hope is the Yankees can re-sign Avilan.

Urshela’s bone spur could be the break Andujar needs to start hitting. That is something he hasn’t done in a bench role and has been assigned to the alternate site twice. He entered Friday’s first game hitting .160 (4-for-25) in 10 games.

As for the other injured Yankees, Boone described Judge’s strain of the right calf as “hopefully something that doesn’t keep him down too long but definitely something we have to continue to get right.’’
