#Woman accused of bashing cops with cane ordered held on $7.5K bail

The woman accused of bashing police officers with a wooden cane on the Brooklyn Bridge this week was ordered held on $7,500 bail during her Friday morning arraignment.

Chanice Reyes, 25, appeared before Manhattan Criminal Court Judge John Howard-Algarin via video conference two days after the caught-on-camera attack.

Bail was set at $7,500 cash or credit card, $40,000 insurance company bond or $60,000 surety bond.

In a criminal complaint, prosecutors say Reyes whacked Lt. Michael Butler and Sgt. Richard Adamiak in the head with the cane as they tried to arrest someone else on the bridge.

Both suffered a laceration, bleeding and swelling to the head and substantial pain, according to the complaint.

Assistant District Attorney Alireza Khazly called the incident “a very serious and strong case.”

Khazly had requested $75,000 cash or credit bail, $120,000 insurance bond or $150,000 surety bond.

Reyes was driving around 5:10 a.m. Thursday at John Street and Broadway when she was pulled over by police, according to prosecutors.

When Officer Antonio Torres tried to arrest her, she kicked him and locked her arms — prompting Torres to request help from other cops, according to the complaint.

“The defendant then bit one of the arresting officers in the head,” Khazly said.

The woman was brought to the 5th Precinct station house in Lower Manhattan, where she was escorted out in handcuffs and leg irons and put into an ambulance shortly after noon.

Exclusive video shows that although her wrists were shackled behind her back, she managed to work her hands around to flip the bird at reporters.

Asked to explain her alleged actions on the bridge, the woman — who wore a shirt saying “WANTED” in yellow letters — denied any involvement in Wednesday’s incident.

“I didn’t attack nobody,” she said.

Reyes has been charged with second-degree assault, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and attempted assault in the third degree, according to prosecutors.

During the arraignment, Reyes’ attorney Michael Horn called her a “kind and generous young lady.”

“I spoke with numerous people, she worked with homeless people, she is a Black Lives Matter activist, she is peaceful,” Horn said. “[She attended] La Guardia college, [received her] associates degree in 2018 and is enrolled full time at Queens College, working on a Bachelor of Science degree. She is from Brooklyn [and] has strong ties to the community.”

At the end of the arraignment, Algarin advised Reyes to “just make sure you’re here in court.”

“I’m trying to instruct you in the most constructive way,” the judge said. “You already got charged as involved in assaulting police officers. We’re not trying the case now, they’re just allegations. Just make sure to … see this thing through smoothly to get to other side of justice and be served, all right?”

“Thank you very much,” Reyes answered.

“Good morning and good luck to you,” the judge replied.

Reyes will reappear in court on August 17.
