#Man arrested for horrific crash that killed bride leaving her wedding

A suspected DUI driver has been arrested over a horrific wrong-way crash in Utah that killed a bride on her way home from her wedding, police say.

Manaure Gonzalez-Rea, 36, allegedly crashed head-on into 26-year-old Angelica Gabrielle Jimenez Dhondup’s vehicle near Salt Lake City in the early hours of Saturday.

Tragically, the driver of the Toyota Corolla was found to be traveling home from her wedding when she was struck by the wrong-way vehicle and killed. Family was also traveling in the area because they were heading home from the same event.
The bride was driving home from her reception at the time.

Dhondup was driving home from her reception at the time, according to Utah’s Department of Public Safety.

Her new husband, who was Dhondup’s high school sweetheart, was not in the car at the time.

A 20-year-old woman who was a passenger in the bride’s car was rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say Gonzalez-Rea was traveling the wrong way down Interstate 15 in a Toyota pickup truck when he crashed into the victim’s Corolla.

Gonzalez-Rea’s car flipped and landed on its roof in the crash.

The driver of the pickup was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on the charges of: Automobile homicide criminal negligence DUI of alcohol/drugs, Theft, Failure to remain at an accident involving death, Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, reckless driving.

Initial description:
On August 7, 2021 at approximately 1:11 am, a silver Toyota pickup was traveling wrong-way (southbound in the northbound lanes) on the I-15 collector near 1700 South.  A gray Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound in the left lane when a head on collision occurred with the wrong-way pickup.  The 26 year old female driver of the Toyota sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision.  A 20 year old female passenger was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The driver and passenger of the Toyota pickup were assisted out of the vehicle by a passerby.  The Toyota pickup driver stole the passerby’s pickup and was quickly apprehended by responding troopers.  The other passenger of the pickup fled on foot and returned later to the scene.  Impairment is being investigated as the cause of the collision. The State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) and UHP Major Crash Investigation Team (MCIT) are assisting with the investigation.  Family was notified on scene as they were in the area when the collision occurred. The I-15 collector was closed for approximately 5 hours for scene investigation.

Photos from the crash site show the driver’s side of Dhondup’s car totaled and multiple beer cans strewn across the highway.

It was not immediately clear which vehicle the beer cans came from.

Police say Gonzalez-Rea fled after stealing the truck of a witness who had stopped to help.

He was stopped farther up the highway and arrested by a trooper.

Dhondup leaves behind two young sons and a daughter she was one week away from adopting, according to a GoFundMe set up by her family.

Gonzalez-Rea is being held without bail in the Salt Lake County Jail.

He was arrested on suspicion of automobile homicide with criminal negligence and driving under the influence, theft, failure to remain at an accident involving death, DUI and reckless driving.
