“The people of this nation have spoken. They delivered us a clear victory — a convincing victory, a victory for the people,” Biden said after jogging up to the stage at the Chase Center parking lot in his hometown of Wilmington, Del.
More than a thousand jubilant supporters had flocked to the drive-in rally, sitting on the roofs of their cars as they waved American flags and Biden campaign signs.
The incoming president vowed to be a leader for all Americans, and extended a hand to those who voted for his opponent.
“I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide but to unify,” Biden said to cheers.
Speaking directly to Trump supporters, Biden said, “For all those of you who voted for President Trump, I understand the disappointment tonight. I’ve lost a couple times myself. But now, let’s give each other a chance.
“It’s time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen to each other again,” Biden said, adding of political opponents, “They are not our enemies. They are Americans.
“Let this grim era of demonization in America begin to end here and now,” he said. “We must restore the soul of America.”
Biden vowed to immediately begin working on getting the coronavirus pandemic under control, adding that the nation “cannot repair the economy, restore our economy or relish life’s most precious moments” without doing so.
“I’m a proud Democrat, but I will govern as an American,” Biden pledged. “I will work as hard for those who didn’t vote for me, as those who did.”
He also expressed surprise at the exuberant celebrations and “outpouring of joy” that broke out nationwide in the wake of his win.
Biden closed out his speech by citing the Catholic hymn “On Eagles’ Wings,” saying it was a favorite of his son Beau Biden, who died in 2015 at 46 after a battle with cancer.
One of the songs that played during the rally, “Sky Full of Stars” was by one of Beau’s favorite bands, Coldplay.
The president-elect and his vice-president elect Kamala Harris were joined onstage by their families following the speeches, as confetti fell and fireworks exploded.
Biden was spotted kissing his grandchildren and hugging his kids, including Hunter Biden.
The high-tech fireworks show included drones flying overheard that spelled out “BIDEN” and made the shape of the US.
The 77-year-old’s victory, called after he won the state of Pennsylvania on Saturday morning, followed a nail-biting, days-long vote count and has been plunged into further uncertainty as the current commander-in-chief refuses to concede, citing widespread, yet unproven, “fraud.”
Sen. Kamala Harris, who makes history as the first woman, black person and Asian-American to be elected vice president, acknowledged her groundbreaking position from the stage.
Wearing a suffragette-white pantsuit, Harris noted that her ascension to the position came 100 years after the 19th Amendment was ratified and 55 years after the signing of the Voting Rights Act.
“Every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a county of possibilities,” she said.
The incoming veep also delivered a message of hope and unity as she introduced her running mate, saying he would be a leader “for all people.”
She praised Biden for having “the audacity to break one of the most substantial barriers that exist in our country” by selecting a woman as his running mate.
Harris, 56, also extended her gratitude to voters who turned out in record numbers, saying that in choosing Biden, they “chose hope and decency.”
Biden and Harris campaigned on a promise to restore decency to the White House and aggressively fight the surging coronavirus pandemic which has killed 237,000 Americans and infected another 9.89 million people.
“I am honored and humbled by the trust the American people have placed in me and in vice president-elect Harris,” Biden said in a statement earlier Saturday, following his projected victory.
“In the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted. Proving once again, that democracy beats deep in the heart of America.”
President Trump platformed on economic growth and vows to “Make America great again, again” but it wasn’t enough to hold onto the trio of Rust Belt states which had vaulted him to the White House in 2016, even if a “blue wave” never arrived.
The commander-in-chief spent the first day of his lame duck presidency tweeting and golfing and was photographed looking stone-faced as he arrived back at the White House after learning of his loss.
As congratulations poured in from leaders around the world, Trump vowed the race was “far from over” and his campaign is preparing to mount an exhaustive legal fight to challenge the vote in swing states where Trump lost by razor-thin margins.
