#Japan Box Office: Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Repeats at No.1, but Revenue Down 42%

In its second weekend, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time earned 67,939,200 yen (6.24 million USD) on 423,398 admissions. The box office revenue was three times higher than that of the second highest-grossing film of the weekend, Okusama wa Toriatsukai Chuui, which made 220 million yen (2.02 million USD) in its opening weekend.　 

While taking the top spot for two weekends in a row, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 ‘s box office revenue was down 42.3 percent from its first weekend, and attendance was down 44.3 percent. The 155-minute film earned 4,934,996,800 yen (45.37 million USD) on 32,228,733 admissions in its first 14 days. After the weekend, it is certain to have already surpassed 5 billion yen at the box office. However, given the rapid decline in its second weekend, it may be difficult to reach the ten billion yen mark that has been expected in the industry?

Along with a short film Eiga Tropical Rouge Pretty Cure: Tobikome! Collab Dance Party!, Eiga Healin’ Good PreCure Yume no Machi de Kyun! tto GoGo! Daihenshin!!, the 28th feature film in the PreCure franchise, was released in 237 theaters across Japan on March 20, 2021, then earned 115 million yen (1.05 million USD) on 96,000 admissions, making its fourt-place debut.

Its first-weekend gross was 106 percent of the previous 27th film PreCure Miracle Leap: A Strange Day with Everyone released in October 2020. The film also ranked third on Filmarks’ first-day satisfaction ranking with an approval rating of 3.74 based on 57 reviews.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train ranked seventh in its 23rd weekend, three spots down from the previous weekend. Its cumulative box office gross in Japan has reached 38.7 billion yen (356 million USD). With the new bonus items that will be given to theatergoers from the end of next week, it may be possible to break the 40 billion yen mark at the box office.
