“This woman playing the piano in the midst of the rubble in Lebanon reminded me of the scene in Titanic when the band plays music calmly while the ship is sinking,” Lebanese author and activist Najwa Zebian said in a Twitter post on Wednesday. “Hope. Hope. Hope. Hope in the middle of the ashes. #lebanon #beirut.”
ABC News said on Twitter that the woman’s granddaughter said she was “pushing through her pain” in a moment of “beauty from ashes.”
The video shows the unidentified woman calmly sitting at her piano, playing the traditional tune amid the wreckage of what was her home.
Glass and debris are everywhere around her, with the window and a curtain blown in. A coffee table sits destroyed under the curtain, and decorative artifacts can be seen knocked over.
Voices can be heard in the apartment amid the sound of shattered glass.
