At Gamescom 2022 we had the opportunity to present the latest version of «Genshin Impact” and as an additional treat we were also able to take a look at the upcoming HoYoverse game “Honkai Star Rail”.

HoYoverse invited us to their booth in Hall 8 of Koelnmesse as part of Gamescom 2022. There we were able to get into the new update of «Genshin Impact» and into the coming game «Honkai: Star Rail” watch. How much we liked both games is revealed below.

«Genshin Impact» with big V3 update

That Open World Action RPG «Genshin Impact» was equipped with version 3.0 on August 24th with the expansion “A thousand roses awaken in the morning”. The expansion brings with it a new realm: Sumeru. This is the fourth of the seven major cities in the game. The new area brings with it not only a city, but also a dense rainforest and numerous settlements, including the port of Ormos. Also, the new update 3.0 also brings the Dendro element, the last part of the system of the seven elements of «Genshin Impact».

The Dendro element will be available to players for the first time, along with a brand new chain of elemental reactions. The Dendro element, in contact with the Pyro, Hydro and Electric elements, can trigger three basic reactions: flaming, sprouting and sprouting. In combat, the last two reactions can evolve into additional reactions. When Dendro Power meets Hydro Power, the Sprout reaction creates one or more Dendro Cores that explode after a short time, dealing Dendro area damage. When Dendro Cores come into contact with Pyro Power, they trigger Flame Sprout, which deals even more intense Dendro area damage when it explodes. Electro-Power, on the other hand, transforms the Dendro Cores into proliferating projectiles that can automatically hit opponents with “Super Sprout”. When Dendro Force meets Electric Force, the reaction Wild Growth occurs, which puts the targets in the Primal Growth state and increases their damage from the next Electric or Dendro attack by using the reaction Super Growth or Vine Growth ‘ is triggered.

The new Sumeru area and the Dendro combat element bring a breath of fresh air to the game. We enjoyed exploring the new and huge area and using the Dendro element in combat. However, we cannot say for sure whether the expansion can keep the players happy in the long term. However, our first impression of the new update is quite positive and we are happy that we are finally getting further into the world of «Genshin Impact» can dive in.

«Honkai: Star Rail»: An interesting combination of adventure and strategy

With “Honkai: Star Rail» HoYoverse is trying something new. Instead of an action open-world role-playing game à la «Genshin Impact» an adventure RPG with strategic elements awaits us here. It represents the fourth part of the «Honkai» series and is the first game in the series that focuses on turn-based tactical combat.

In the game you take on the role of a passenger on the Astral Express. You embark on a journey through space to discover different worlds and try to help friends and other comrades-in-arms in need. The game relies heavily on dungeon exploration, turn-based strategic combat mechanics and has a classic level-up system.

In our preview session we were able to look at a small story part of the game. We are in a city and we have to fight our way through crowds of enemies to escape. In the game you can move freely in a defined area. There are enemies in the game world that you can attack. As soon as you hit an opponent, the fight is initiated. Similar to “Final Fantasy” or other classic-oriented games with turn-based combat systems, you fight your opponents. You can fight opponents with normal attacks and skill abilities. In the course of the fight, a bar that is located next to the character avatars also fills up. If this is filled, you can perform an ultimate attack that, depending on your ability, can hit all enemies at once. Incidentally, there are no items to choose from in combat, instead you can buff and heal yourself with certain skill abilities.

Our introductory session with Honkai Star Rail was quite short, but we were able to get a good look at the game’s combat system and got to see some great animated cutscenes and combat sequences. We were especially excited about the ultimate attacks. We’re excited to see how well and how long the finished game can keep us entertained. Fans of games with turn-based combat systems will definitely enjoy «Honkai: Star Rail” to have.
