It’s been 19 years since the first episode of “Detective Conan” flickered on German television screens. At that time, the series was still running on the former number one anime broadcaster – RTL II. But even before the anime made its debut in Germany on April 10, 2002, it was available on the website in March of the same year AnimeDigital.de read an accompanying review. The special thing about it is that the Statements from two German participants were published.
Unfortunately, the site has not existed for a long time, which is why we rummaged through the Internet archive in order to be able to present these statements to you today in a new splendor!
Translator’s statement:
The first statement comes from Susanne Schmidt-Wussow, the translator of many “Detective Conan” episodes at the time. She made the rough translation on which the dialogue book was ultimately based. Here are their impressions from 2002:
«[I]I did the rough translations for MME. I translated all 102 episodes except for about 12 episodes. That was a lot of fun because the series is not as “kid stuff” as Digimon and Co. (sorry, I’m not a big anime fan, although Digimon was translated by a friend of mine and certainly very good …), but You have to do some real research now and then for the translation (for example, I’ve never learned as much about baseball, golf or mah-jongg as in some of the Conan episodes!) and above all because it is really funny. Not what the Japanese often find funny and what for me at least barely misses hysterical silliness, but dry, quick joke that is also well received in German … »
Statement from the producer of the German songs:
Also the German music producer Andy Knote made a brief statement. He is one of the founders of the “Toyco” studios and was involved in the well-known German versions of the “Detective Conan” openings. Here is his statement:
«Sings the two songs Gerry Koehler[,] a brand new member of the “Toyco family”. I have the lyrics together with Henk Flemming created, we stayed pretty close to the original.
At first I was a bit surprised, because the songs are unusually “pithy”, they have little to do with Japanese pop. Meanwhile I think the songs are really good, which is also due to the great implementation by Gerry.
As I know there is still a lot to come, there should be over 10 openers and endings – I’m curious … »
