American Sicario has already become the talk of the town following its release last week. The Danny Trejo-Philippe A. Haddad starter follows the rise and fall of the first American-born cartel boss in Mexico. Directed by RJ Collins, the film seems to have struck a note with fans of crime drama or gangster drama, amidst the few complaints about Danny Trejo’s little screen time.

American Sicario follows the real-life story of Erik Vasquez, who was also known as La Munequita or “little doll,” the American who rose to the apex of the Mexican drug kingdom and subsequently met his fall.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, RJ Collins, the director, said:

Once I heard this amazing true story, I knew this movie was the one for me to helm, especially because the film is from the perspective of a real life Cartel boss. Philippe pitched it to me, and we knew Trejo was the right fit, along with Maurice and the entire cast.

Although Erik’s journey began as a man from a humble upbringing, he soon became a part of the notorious Feliz cartel as a ‘Sicario’ (a hitman or hired killer). However, Erik desired the throne of the Feliz Cartel, which was initially headed by Roberto (Maurice Compte) and his brother Juan. Although a Sicario, Erik stuck to his principle of never hurting women and children. But he did leave a pile of bodies in his wake on the path to becoming a king in the Mexican underworld.

American Sicario revolves around Erik Vasquez (Philippe A. Haddad) and his ambition to become a cartel boss, but the film balances it well with Erik’s foil, Pedro (Danny Trejo). Pedro is a former cartel member, living his life on the run and glancing over his shoulders, who disapproves of Erik’s ambition and tries talking him out of it. In the given clip of American Sicario, the chemistry between the two is impeccable: Erik’s cold determination and Pedro’s wisdom.

RJ Collins helmed the project as the director, and it is technically his first directorial venture apart from the upcoming film Don’t Suck. Collins has previously worked as a producer for a huge roster of films like the Netflix film True Memoirs of an International Assassin (starring Kevin James and Andy Garcia), and Momentum, starring Olga Kurylenko, James Purefoy, and Morgan Freeman. Philippe A. Haddad has executive produced the film.

American Sicario will be available on Blu-ray, Digital, and DVD on December 14th.
