#’Bored Ape’ NFT sells for $3K instead of $300K due to a typo

Have you ever made a six-figure typo?   

An online NFT trader accidentally listed an exclusive “Bored Ape” NFT for $3,000 rather than $300,000 — and someone snapped up the digital collectible before he had time to correct his mistake. 

“How’d it happen? A lapse of concentration I guess,” the seller, who goes by the name Max, told CNET. “I list a lot of items every day and just wasn’t paying attention properly.” 

The online market for NFTs — or non-fungible tokens, which are tradable blockchain-based digital art pieces — has boomed in recent months. The 10,000 Bored Apes in existence are some of the most sought-after NFTs, with some selling for north of $2 million. Late night host Jimmy Fallon and Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry have both bought versions of the cartoon monkeys.

Max had meant to list his Bored Ape for 75 ethereum crypto coins but accidentally typed just 0.75 ethereum on Friday, he told CNET. The buyer who snapped up the NFT then re-listed it for more than $300,000. 

If Max had made a six-figure typo while trading stocks, he would probably be able to cancel or reverse the transaction. But in the unregulated and de-centralized cryptocurrency world, he’s out of luck. 

Despite the expensive error, Max seems to be zen. 

“The industry is so new, bad things are going to happen whether it’s your fault or the tech,” he said. “Once you no longer have control of the outcome, forget and move on.”

This is not the first time a NFT seller has accidentally lost money through a typo. In November, a seller meant to post a CryptoPunk NFT for $19 million but accidentally listed it for just $19,000, according to CNET.
