#CLAMP’s Tokyo Babylon Gets Anime Scheduled For 2021

CLAMP’s Tokyo Babylon manga is getting an anime adaptation scheduled for a 2021 release. Studio GoHands is handling the animation production duties.

The announcement was made on the anime’s Twitter page. A trailer featuring series protagonist Subaru Sumeragi and the character Seishirou Sakurazuka was released as well, while the anime’s website features a visual of Subaru clad in his Onmyouji clothing. The anime’s character designs and compositing bring to mind previous GoHands titles, although the color filtering seems more restrained than the studio’s recent works. 

The Tokyo Babylon manga was first published in Japan in the 1990s. It also received an OAV adaptation in 1992. Dark Horse Comics describes the story:

It’s 1991, the last days of Japan’s bubble economy, and money and elegance run through the streets. So do the currents of darkness beneath them, nourishing evil spirits that only the arts of the onmyoji—Japan’s legendary occultists—can combat. The two most powerful onmyoji are in the unlikely guises of a handsome young veterinarian, Seishiro, and the teenage heir to the ancient Sumeragi clan, Subaru.

Subaru and Seishiro also appeared as side characters in CLAMPs X, which was set after the events of Tokyo Babylon and featured a conflict between two opposing sides for the fate of humanity. They also appeared in Tsubasa ~RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE~, another CLAMP work, albeit as different versions of their Tokyo Babylon and X selves.
