“Apple App Store to Get Even More Ads This Week – Review Geek”
Ads in Apple’s iOS App Store are nothing new. The company has been placing ads there since 2016. However, they kept the promotions out of the main “Today” tab, reserving that space for Apple’s own recommendations. That changes starting October 25th.
MacRumors reports that Apple sent an email to developers informing them that a new “You Might Also Like” section would appear at the bottom of the “Today” tab. All promoted apps will be on a blue background and have an “Ad” icon.
The “Today” tab has traditionally been free of ads in favor of apps selected by Apple’s editorial team. Current sections in the “Today” tab include “Now Available,” “Our Favorites,” “Now Trending,” “Apple Arcade,” “App of the Day,” “What We’re Playing,” and more.
A support page on Apple’s website states, “With a Today tab ad, your app can appear prominently on the front page of the App Store — making it some of the first content users see when they begin their App Store visit.”
According to MacRumors, App Store advertisements were previously based on your search results and displayed in the “Search” tab. Apple first announced that ads were coming to the Today tab back in July.
A Bloomberg report from August stated that the company intends to triple its ad revenue to $10 billion in the coming years. Additional ads in the App Store are just one step toward that goal. Apple plans to place advertisements in Apple Maps starting next year.
