#Angezockt: One More Gate – A Wakfu Legend

Cosmocover invited us to Gamescom 2023 to play the new game from development studio Ankama “One More Gate – A Wakfu Legend”. Here is our first impression.

With “One More Gate – A Wakfu Legend” the development studio Ankama showed a roguelike deck-building game at Gamescom 2023 based on the French anime series “Dedicated” based. That’s why we were even more pleased to test the game.

“One More Gate – A Wakfu Legend” is a roguelike deck-builder style game that combines exploration with strategic, turn-based combat. Players can explore various locations and harness the power of the Wakfu to create devastating card combinations and prevail against all enemies.

In the Gamescom 2023 preview we had the opportunity to do a run in the dungeon. Anyone who already knows deck builder games will be familiar with the game mechanics of “One More Gate – A Wakfu Legend” can quickly become familiar. Because many of the game mechanics are familiar from similar deck builders. But the unique thing about this game: the energy system. This is needed to play cards. At the start of a battle you have three energy and gain an additional energy each round until you reach six energy. If you then play enough cards to use up exactly six energy, you can finally trigger a final attack that attacks all opponents.

A fight looks like this: Using various action cards, you have to defeat the opponents who are on the right side of the game. It is important to proceed strategically. Because you can only attack opponents who are in the front row with normal attack actions. This means that strong opponents in the back row can quickly become a problem as they cannot be eliminated immediately. Some attacks have the ability to push the front monster backwards, which can change the positions of the monsters so you can get to higher priority enemies more quickly. After each battle you receive new cards, gold and additional currency that is needed for upgrades outside of dungeon runs.

Along the way to the boss fight, you can upgrade your cards, collect equipment, and encounter random events to prepare your deck for the upcoming boss fight. Unfortunately we didn’t make it to the boss because our time was running out quickly. Graphically, the game does a very good job of reflecting the original and is very reminiscent of the anime series.

Our first impression

“One More Gate – A Wakfu Legend” is an exciting game that encourages players to think strategically and impresses with anime-esque graphics. Fans of deck builder games and of course “Dedicated” your friends will certainly have a turn.

“One More Gate – A Wakfu Legend” has been available for PC since September 12, 2023 and will soon also appear on the Nintendo Switch.
