Though the British Monarchy has long fascinated both English and international audiences, much about the family members’ lives is kept out of the public eye. So it’s Netflix’s series The Crown that fills in those blanks.

Sure, not every detail is accurate, but plenty of the storylines are rooted in the family’s history, and that includes the stories around Queen Elizabeth‘s husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away at age 99 on April 9.

Portrayed in the series first by Matt Smith (Doctor Who), then Tobias Menzies (Outlander), and soon to be Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones), the prince’s tales have uncovered a side of him some viewers might not have known before.
