#Yankees vs. Nationals prediction: Scherzer will struggle vs. Bombers

The first game of the 2020 MLB regular season will have the same pitching matchup as Game 1 of the 2019 World Series, though this time Gerrit Cole will be making his New York Yankees debut against Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals.

Cole saved his best for last in 2019, making 12 starts from July 22 on during the regular season with his team winning every start while he had a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 8.8 to go with a 1.52 ERA.

On the other side, Scherzer dealt with injuries during the second half of 2019 and did not look sharp in his summer-camp exhibition start against the Philadelphia Phillies, giving up seven earned runs in five innings. More concerning was his fastball velocity sitting in the low 90s in the start, down from the normal 95 mph he had on his fastball a season ago.

The Yankees also got three home runs in their final two summer-camp exhibitions from Aaron Judge, who was injured along with Giancarlo Stanton throughout much of a 2019 season that saw the Yankees go to the AL Championship Series.

The Nationals are trying to replace Anthony Rendon from the middle of last year’s lineup, coupled with a bullpen that was 29th in the league in ERA last season. That should give the Yankees the upper hand on Opening Day.

The play: Yankees (-135).
