The 36-year-old victim was delivering food to people impacted by COVID-19 when she was struck by the driver on Northern Boulevard near the intersection of 110th Street at around 4 p.m., police said.
She was taking the food out of her SUV when the driver crashed into her from behind, pinning her against the car, according to Carmen Velasquez, a bystander who worked with the victim at the nonprofit Brigada de Esperanza NY.
Velasquez said the woman is the coordinator at the organization and a mother of three children who loves to play soccer.
“She’s been one of the pillars of the program to help people, to make sure they’re well,” said Velasquez.
“She’s a really hard-working individual who would do anything to help out another person…we’re devastated,” she added.
The woman was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital.
The driver remained on the scene and was taken into custody. Police are investigating whether he was drunk at the time of the crash, police sources said.
An open can of beer was visible in the driver’s center console.
