Will and should NBC renew Songland Season 3?

Songland isn’t on tonight. The show ended its second season on June 15. Now eyes are on the future, whether NBC will renew Songland Season 3.

This isn’t just about whether the show will be renewed, though. I also want to look at whether it needs to be. I’m not usually the biggest fan of reality TV, and yet, this show has me hooked each week because it offers something that no other reality show can.

Chances of a Songland renewal

I do think that there is a chance Songland will be renewed, but it’s not guaranteed. NBC is relying on more than just live ratings now, but the live ratings are all we get to see clearly.

While the ratings were down from the first season, they’re not yet dangerously low. However, the dip is something to be concerned about.

What’s more important to consider is where the dips happened. The odd episode would see a sharp drop but then the ratings would hold steady for a few weeks. This could be a hint at the types of artists or music that viewers aren’t interested in. Of course, that doesn’t mean all types of artists or music should be excluded, but that it could suggest strategic placements of episodes.

When the network as a whole is considered, Songland sits in the middle of the spring shows. This suggests it would be a lower risk to keep this series on for another year than pick up a freshman show that may not do well. Also, unscripted shows tend to cost less than scripted, so lower ratings are more permissible.

Songland Season 3 needs to happen

There are many reality shows out there. Most of them find the next artist or the next dancer. They help people find love or even find a partner to have a baby with! Songland offers something different.

Instead of finding the next artist, it offers the chance for songwriters to find a place in the industry. There are always openings for writers, but it can be a hard industry to break into; much harder than the singers.

Writing has become a collaborative process now more than ever. A show like this offers a look at how music evolves; how a song can start as one thing but grow into something unique. There’s a chance to see how a song about one person’s experience can be transformed into something for another artist.

The songwriters aren’t just getting tips and advice from producers. They’re getting tips from experienced songwriters and artists; those who have great hits or written great hits so know what to look out for. Martina McBride, Florida Georgia Line, and Bebe Rexha are among the artists from Season 2, giving you a look at the caliber.

It helps to bring a new appreciation for the songwriting and music production process.
