“Violence and destruction are not legitimate forms of protest. They do not safeguard black lives. They destroy them,” Ann Dorn said.
The grieving widow broke into tears as she recounted the night of June 2, when her 77-year-old husband David Dorn was killed in front of a pawn shop he was trying to protect from looters, in a shooting live-streamed on Facebook.
“As I slept, looters were ransacking the shop. They shot and killed Dave in cold blood and live-streamed the execution and his last moments on this earth,” Dorn said.
“Dave’s grandson was watching the video on Facebook in real time, not realizing he was watching his own grandfather dying on the sidewalk.”
Dorn described learning of her husband’s death at 4 a.m., when St. Louis police came to her door to give her the wrenching news.
“I relive that horror in my mind every single day,” she said. “My hope is that having you relive it with me now will help shake this country from the nightmare we are witnessing in our cities and bring about positive, peaceful change.”
“How did we get to this point where so many young people are so callous and indifferent towards human life?,” she asked.
However, Dorn said, President Trump understands the value of having communities with people like her husband, who spent half his life on the Missouri force.
“In a time when police departments are short on resources and manpower, we need that help. We should accept that help,” she sad.
“We must heal before we can effect change, but we cannot heal amid devastation and chaos. President Trump knows we need more Davids in our communities, not fewer.”
