Carson is the only black member of President Trump’s Cabinet and urged peace following the police shooting of Blake on Sunday, which triggered nights of looting and arson and the shooting death of two protesters Tuesday by a 17-year-old armed with a rifle.
“Our hearts go out to the Blake family, and the other families that have been impacted by the tragic events in Kenosha,” Carson said.
“As Jacob’s mother has urged the country, we choose our hearts, our love and our intelligence to work together to show the rest of the world how humans are supposed to treat each other. America is great when we behave greatly. In order to succeed and change, we must first come together and love of our fellow citizens.”
Carson also defended Trump’s record on racial issues, noting he signed the criminal justice-reforming First Step Act, permanent funding for historically black colleges and a law that incentivizes investment in poor areas.
“Many on the other side love to incite division by claiming that President Trump is a racist. They could not be more wrong,” Carson said. “Years ago, Jesse Jackson gave Donald Trump an award for the economic opportunities he created for Black people. In Palm Beach, Florida, Donald Trump led the crusade to allow blacks and Jews into private clubs and resorts.”
Before entering politics, Carson, 68, was a neurosurgeon known for successfully separating twins conjoined at the head.
The Detroit, Mich., native ran for the Republican nomination for president in 2016, but eventually dropped out of the race and threw his support behind Trump.
As HUD secretary, Carson has supported rent increases and advocated for cutting back on housing regulations. He’s also a member of the White House coronavirus task force.
The final night of the convention will culminate in Trump accepting the GOP nomination for president live from the South Lawn of the White House.
