If you love cats and indie adventure games, you absolutely have to play Cat Quest. If playing as a ferocious little cat doesn’t pique your interest, this probably isn’t the game for you. But really, who’s not going to love a game like this?
Cat Quest was made by The Gentlebros in 2017 and caught my attention almost immediately on Steam. I played it a few months after it was released in August and never came across any bugs or glitches; it was a well-made little indie game.
I honestly can’t remember if I was looking for games with cats in them, browsing through adventure or RPG games on Steam, or if I just saw it advertised and thought, “Hey, that looks awesome.” There was (and still is) a free demo, so I tried it out, loved it, and bought the game almost immediately.
When I first played Cat Quest, it didn’t take long for me to finish the main game, but I never got 100% of the achievements on Steam. The last few achievements are kind of difficult, so I’ve been putting them off for years now, but I recently got a hankering to play again. The game is just as good as I remember it, and I’m having a fun time challenging myself with even harder versions this time around.
The combat style of Cat Quest is pretty simple to get the hang of. You walk up to an enemy, they aggro, and then you see a red circle or other red markings that show you where the enemy will attack, giving you the time you need to dodge and plan your attack. I love that the combat and larger battles throughout the game are simple but still challenging enough to keep you entertained. (Even the most skilled gamers will probably die more than once in the beginning.)
I can’t talk about the story without giving too much away, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn’t wait to see what happened next when I played through it the first time. Basically, you play as a cat who has the mark of The Dragonblood, meaning you have special powers that let you dole out magic to your enemies and protect those around you.
And the puns. Oh my god, the puns. This game is full of them, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. From the names of areas—like The Catpital and Furbidden Fields—to the punny dialogue between characters during main missions and side quests, it’s hilarious.
My initial playthrough didn’t take me more than 10 to 15 hours, but because of the challenging achievements past your first playthrough, there’s a lot of replayability to this game. To get all the achievements, you have to start a “Mew Game” after your first playthrough with specific modifiers attached that alter your game.
There are five different modifiers you can start a “Mew Game” with, but you have to play with certain combinations to unlock three separate pieces of the master armor set. The five modifiers are:
- Furry Armored: You keep all weapons from your previous game and stay at the same level.
- Stronger Enemies: As the title implies, enemies are much stronger.
- Naked Cat: With this one, you can’t equip any weapons or armor.
- Level One: You can equip weapons and armor, but you don’t ever move up from Level One.
- Nine Lives: You can only die nine times throughout the whole playthrough.
There’s an achievement for completing the game with each of the five modifiers above and obtaining the master armor set. To get the three pieces of the master armor set, you have to beat the game with one modifier, then two modifiers, then three modifiers. Also, if you use the Furry Armored modifier, you don’t earn any of the master armor sets.
Extremely difficult, no?! But I’m trying again, so we’ll see how long I go before getting sick of dying over and over again.
I’ve also since played Cat Quest II; it’s another excellent game, and you can switch between playing as a cat and a dog in this one. Personally, I prefer the first game’s story, but overall, both games are great. There are also plans for a third game in the series!
