#What caused the Maui Fires? | Latest Update

A deadly wildfire has engulfed Hawaii forcing an emergency evacuation and power cut for thousands. A massive blaze is spreading in the tourist town of Lahaina, on Maui, sending many people towards the ocean to seek refuge. At least six people have lost their lives to the Maui fires, as confirmed by Mayor Richard Bissen at the Wednesday briefing.

The US Coast Guards are leading rescue operations for the people who have jumped into the ocean. They have already saved over a dozen citizens of Lahaina. On the frontier, business owner Alan Dickar has witnessed buildings burning on both sides of the streets to Honolulu-based KGMBTV.

What is the cause of the Maui Fires?

Officials had announced a red flag alert for fire risks in much of Hawaii when the wildfire began. However, the exact cause that led to the first spark is unknown.

  • Maj. Gen. Kenneth Hara, commander general of the Hawaii Army National Guard, confirmed on Wednesday briefing that they were warned about the fire risks by the National Weather Service. He further shares that the dry weather is playing the leading role in the fires as fuel, trees, and everything is inflammable. Maj. Gen. Hara adds that low humidity and high winds have created conditions for wildfires.
  • The powerful winds generated by Hurricane Dora moving across the Pacific Ocean have sent powerful winds toward Hawaii islands fanning the ongoing fires. The hurricane is contributing to wind at 60 miles per hour.
  • The national helicopters were active under the state’s emergency response to wildfires, but they had to make a landing due to the overpowering winds that hit Maui on Tuesday, August 8. The National Weather Service previously confirmed that the wildfires will continue from Monday, August 7 to Wednesday, August 9, due to atmospheric pressure and dry conditions.

Latest updates of the Maui Fires

Maui officials focused on rescue operations and said they could not confirm the damages for weeks or months. The acting governor Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke noted that the state would extend all the necessary assistance and federal aid to help in wildfires and the aftermath.

  • President Joe Biden has also extended his condolences to the people of Maui and pledged to provide federal assistance. The helicopters that couldn’t take off due to heavy winds have finally begun to deploy water overhead.
  • Two new bushfires are also reported on the island of Hawaii. However, the Mayor of the Big Island said that the focus should be on Maui, which is now suffering from wildfires causing six casualties. The bushfires occurred in the Kaʻū region and Mauna Kea Beach.

Meteorologist confirms: Winds will lower down in a few hours

One of the significant elements assisting the wildfires spreading across Maui island is the high winds from Hurricane Dora. They reached a peak of 67 miles per hour during the Monday to Wednesday warnings.

  • These winds began to lower on Wednesday, August 9, evening, reaching around 50 miles per hour, and they will decline even more in the upcoming days. Ian Morrison, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Honolulu, confirms that within the next 24 hours, they predict the winds will reach an average of 10-20 miles per hour with gusts of 30 miles per hour.
  • However, he has warned that dropping winds doesn’t confirm that fires will stop but will aid firefighters to continue their rescue missions.

With at least six deaths and over 2100 people residing in emergency shelters across Maui, the world hopes that the wildfires will get under control soon and that no more casualties will occur. We extend our condolences to everyone suffering from the Maui wildfires.
