The name and logo were officially retired Monday morning after a review was prompted by recent backlash from corporate sponsors and decades of controversy about its offensive Native American origins.
The expected announcement included the term Redskins and came on logoed stationary because the name remains unchanged until the process is completed. The replacement name was not revealed, but the decision to change is final.
“On July 3rd, we announced the commencement of a thorough review of the team’s name,” the statement read. “That review has begun in earnest. As part of this process, we want to keep our sponsors, fans and community apprised of our thinking as we go forward.
“Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review. Dan Snyder and Coach [Ron] Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.”
The name change comes 10 days after the team said it would conduct a “thorough review” of the name.
Snyder, who bought the team in 1999, told USA Today in 2013 that he’d “never” change the team’s name. Seven years later, that’s exactly what’s happening.
