#VTubers Apologize for Uncredited Use of Among Us Translation Mod

Nijisanji plays Among Us

Gamers worldwide have been falling in love with InnerSloth's Among Us, a deceptively cute social deduction game that plays like Mafia meets The Thing on a space station. Originally released in 2018, the game skyrocketed to popularity as YouTube and Twitch streamers picked it up in recent months. And while the majority of those streams have gone well, VTuber group Nijisanji is now navigating apologies and negotiations due to recent gameplay.

Nijisanji recently grouped up to play an Among Us stream of their own. And, like other Japanese VTubers including Kizuna Ai, they availed themselves of a Japanese language mod released on September 18, created by eSports team Burning Core's GM So Masuoka (ID SoWhaaaaat).

However, players hoping to tune in to the streams after the fact found that all the videos were set to private. A tweet from Masuoka sheds some light on the subject: he discovered that the Japanese language mod was being used without any sort of credit given. He went on to state that the event made him lose any motivation to keep the mod updated or supported — making it more difficult for Japanese fans to continue playing.

In an effort to smooth things over, Nijisanji's VTubers set their Among Us videos to private, issuing apologies and explanations on their respective Twitter accounts. One, Shiina Yuika, explained that they are currently negotiating with Masuoka on a way to make things right, and asks that fans refrain from tweeting their opinions to the programmer in the meantime.

Opinion on the situation is divided in the fan community. Some take Masuoka's side, believing in giving credit where credit is due and expressing disappointment that this wasn't done in the first place. Others note that the mod is downloadable from the Japanese Among Us wiki without any credits or "Read Me" file, and has previously been used uncredited with no complaints raised.

Whichever way negotiations go with Nijisanji, there is no shortage of Among Us gameplay to follow on your favorite platform in the meantime — not to mention fan-made videos and memes.
