The 38-year-old victim was on Mother Gaston Boulevard near Sumpter Street at 9:30 p.m. that day when several strangers approached him, cops said.
Video released by authorities late Monday shows several people chasing after the victim and then repeatedly punching and kicking him.
The crew took off after the assault, which left the victim with a large cut on his face.
He was taken to Brookdale University Medical Center in stable condition.
The suspects are still on the loose Tuesday. The motive for the beating was not immediately clear.
