#GKIDS & Anime Limited Acquire Global Rights of Naoko Yamada’s The Colors Within Anime Film

GKIDS and Anime Limited have announced a multi-territory acquisition of Naoko Yamada’s latest anime film The Colors Within (known in Japan as Kimi no Iro). The film will be released in Japan on August 30, 2024 after an initial delay from its Fall 2023 release.

GKIDS will screen the film in North America, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand in both English subbed and dubbed next winter. Meanwhile, Anime Limited will screen it in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and all of Europe. PLAION PICTURES will handle distribution in Italian and German speaking territories. Asia, the Middle East, and Northern Africa will be excluded. 

GKIDS and Anime Limited also confirmed that production house Charades will help manage sales of the film for the rest of Europe, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand.

Yamada’s film will also have its world premiere in competition at the prestigious 2024 Annecy International Animated Film Festival. GKIDS will qualify the film for 2024-25 awards consideration. 

The Colors Within reunites Yamada with scriptwriter Reiko Yoshida (The Heike Story) and music composer Kensuke Ushio (Chainsaw Man), who previously collaborated on A Silent Voice, Liz and the Blue Bird, and The Heike Story. Takashi Kojima (The Heike Story, Ride Your Wave, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet) is also credited as the film’s character designer, while Science SARU is handling the film’s animation production.

GKIDS describes the synopsis of The Colors Within as: 

Totsuko is a high school student with the ability to see the ‘colors’ of others. Colors of bliss, excitement, and serenity, plus a color she treasures as her favorite. Kimi, a classmate at her school, gives off the most beautiful color of all. Although she doesn’t play an instrument, Totsuko forms a band with Kimi and Rui, a quiet music enthusiast they meet at a used bookstore in a far corner of town. As they practice at an old church on a remote island, music brings them together, forming friendships and stirring affections. Will they discover their true ‘colors’?
