A new key visual and PV trailer for the Utawarerumono Mask of Truth anime series have been released. The 28-episode anime series premiered on July 3, 2022 and is set to premiere its upcoming 19th episode next week. 

Utawarerumono Mask of Truth serves as a final chapter for the animated adaptation of the long-running visual novel franchise, with the visual and trailer highlighting upcoming scenes from the anime. It is an adaptation of the AQUAPLUS video game series of the same name, which was first released in Japan in 2016 for PS3, PS4, and PS Vita. An English version was released in 2017 and later on Steam in 2020.

The main cast consists of Kentarou Tone as Oshtar/Haku, Risa Taneda as Kuon, Chinatsu Akasaki as Anju, and Inori Minase as Nekone. Other voice cast members include Miyuki Sawashiro as Aruru, Rie Kugimiya as Kamyu, Sayaka Ohara as Urutori, Atsuko Tanaka as Karulau, Kaya Miyake as Touka, Tsuyoshi Koyama as Kurou, Daisuke Namikawa as Benawi, Daisuke Kirii as Oboro, Akeno Watanabe as Dori and Gura, and Hiroshi Shirokuma as Munto.

The production staff includes Kenichi Kawamura (Re: Life In a different World from Zero: Frozen Bonds chief director) as director, Itsuki Yokoyama (Overlord II scriptwriter) as series screenwriter, and Masahiko Nakata (INFINITE DENDROGRAM) as character designer and chief animation director. Other staff members include Yoshito Takamine (Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- Season 2) as art director, Tsubasa Yokoyama (She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man) as photography director, and Miyuki Satou (Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon) as color designer. AQUAPLUS is credited with the music production, while WHITE FOX is handling the animation production.  

The first Utawarerumono game was released in 2002, while the second game was released in 2015. The series has inspired spin-offs, manga, and various anime adaptations, including a 2006 anime series, a 2009 OVA episode, another anime series called Utawarerumono The False Faces in 2015, and another 2018 OVA.

Crunchyroll is streaming the Utawarerumono Mask of Truth anime and describes it as: 

Yamato descends into chaos following the death of the emperor. Oshutoru, the General of the Right, is a fugitive accused of poisoning Empress Anju. In a battle with his pursuers, he uses the full power of the Akuruka, fusing his body and soul with the world itself. Before he says goodbye, he entrusts Anju and Nekone’s future to his friend Haku. Taking up Oshutoru’s mask and identity, Haku abandons his old life. He tells everyone, except Nekone, who knows the truth, that he is Oshutoru. They escape to Ennakamui, where Anju begins to recover, and she rises up to reclaim her rightful place as Empress.

But Raikou, one of the Eight Pillar Generals, attempts to take advantage of the chaos and put a false empress on the throne. Yamato’s armies soon march for Ennakamui to kill the true Empress.

A war is about to begin that will engulf all of Yamato…
