Daniel Berger
Because it would be amazing to see a player who’s won once already this year (Colonial), ranked near the top 10 and a major championship winner NOT in the Masters field in November. Even a win this week would not get Berger to Augusta in November, because this event is technically being played in the 2021 season. Berger, too, has been in good form this year.
Dustin Johnson
He’s the Vegas favorite, and it’s difficult to bet against him considering he’s finished first or second in his last four events and has four top-five finishes at the U.S. Open in his last six tries. He’ll be in contention, but winning just seems too obvious a pick.
Jon Rahm
He’s yet to truly contend in a major, which is troublesome, but his win at the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields, which was the toughest course setup since the PGA Tour COVID-19 restart, shows he can win on a difficult course. So, too, does his win at Memorial.
Webb Simpson
The 2012 U.S. Open winner is quietly in strong form and he does what needs to be done at Winged Foot: He hits a lot of fairways.
Xander Schauffele
He’s never finished outside the top six at a U.S. Open and has played well this year. He just hasn’t closed the door in the big moment
