Tokyo Mew Mew New is described as a “renewal” of the story first told by the Kodansha-published Tokyo Mew Mew manga series. The manga, which ran from 2000 to 2003, is written by prolific anime series composer and scriptwriter Reiko Yoshida (Blue Period and The Heike Story series composer) and illustrated by Mia Ikumi. Kodansha Comics describes the story as:
On her first date with the cutest boy in school, Ichigo is exposed to a mysterious ray that meshes her DNA with that of the endangered Iriomote wildcat. She soon discovers that she has developed superhuman abilities and enhanced agility. Her new powers are put to the test when she leads a team with four other girls, each endowed with special abilities of their own. Together, they must now protect the Earth from an alien menace known as Deep Blue.
The staff includes Takahiro Natori (ARIA The CREPUSCOLO) as director, Satoshi Ishino (RELEASE THE SPYCE) as character designer, Yuka Yamada (Asteroid in Love) as series composer, and Team-MAX’s Yasuharu Takanashi (Taisho Otome Fairy Tale)as music composer. Yumeta Company and Graphinica are in charge of the animation production.
The Tokyo Mew Mew manga was serialized in the Nakayoshi magazine and published under the Kodansha Comics Nakayoshi label. It inspired some video games and a 2002 anime adaptation produced by Studio Pierrot, as well as two other manga series in the form of 2003 to 2004’s Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode and the newer, still on-going Tokyo Mew Mew Olé! that began in 2020.
