It’s been fun to watch Boston Dynamics’ myriad robots complete amazing feats like dancing or gymnastics over the past few years. But now, the company’s Atlas robots have improved their skills so much they look like they are ready to run through an American Ninja Warrior course.

The robot’s development team worked tirelessly for months to program the bots to properly navigate the obstacle course, and the end product is nothing short of spectacular. Throughout the movie, we can see two robots completing various tasks such as leaping over gaps and vaulting over a beam. They also jump and execute incredible backflips.

The day this film was recorded also happened to be the same day that the robots completed the course as a group. In spite of the fact that there is much to consider—and much that may go wrong—the robotics team was so ecstatic after both bots completed the course successfully that they had to keep themselves from bursting into applause before the cameras finished filming.

However, despite the fact that the bots perform an excellent job of going through the course, it is apparent that there is still much more work to be done. As noted by the Boston Dynamics team, the robots did not perform flawlessly on every run, and one of them occasionally “lost its equilibrium and fell backward.”

According to Ben Stephens, Atlas controls lead, “There are a lot of very fascinating behaviors here, and some of them aren’t completely dependable yet.” “Every action has a tiny probability of failure in this environment. Considering that it’s nearly 90 seconds of nonstop leaping, running, twisting, vaulting and flipping, the probabilities mount up.”

Those probability and varied motions will need to be fine-tuned and improved, which will take time, so don’t expect them to run you down on the street or win American Ninja Warrior anytime in the near future.
