The entire device is still the same size as your conventional tennis ball machine – nothing changes there. It weighs a respectable 7 kilograms, and comes with a handle as well as wheels that let you lug it around fairly easily. Unfold the basket, load the tennis balls, and the Tenniix is ready to deploy. 2 smart modes and over 1000 pre-set drills (across 3 difficulty levels) make the Tenniix as smart as you want it. The robot moves around its half of the court, lobbing tennis balls at you with intervals of anywhere between 1 to 10 seconds.

Two key design details make all the difference. The first one is a 1080p camera that uses a bespoke AI to serve as a virtual training or gaming partner. Trained on hours of tennis data, it can be set to an NTRP (National Tennis Ranking Program) level of anywhere between 1 to 5, and can even be programmed to play like your favorite tennis legend, mimicking their style and shot patterns. The second detail is in the form of a screen right above the camera, serving as a display that lets you know what mode you’re training or playing in.

Meanwhile, a Quasi-Direct Drive motor hauls tennis balls at speeds of up to 75mph and distances as far as 8.5 meters (27.8 feet). Full court coverage enables the Tenniix to not just move around everywhere, but to also launch balls at any given point on the court, allowing you to experience what you would with a human trainer or opponent. The AI camera gives the Tenniix impressive accuracy, making it aim balls with precision of roughly 10 inches – more than most human players can achieve, if you ask me!

Controlling the Tenniix is simple – you can either use gestures (which the AI camera picks up), or rely on a bespoke wristband that lets you start/stop routines, alternate between forehand and backhand training, go through presets, and even change difficulty through a series of voice commands. Along with these, the wristband also lets you start and stop video recordings of your game. Aside from powering the Tenniix’s AI vision, the 1080p camera allows you to analyze your game. No tripod, no secondary camera – the Tenniix plays with you as it records you, and footage gets sent to the Tenniix app on your phone, which gives you an AI breakdown of your performance, helping you analyze your progress and fine-tune your skills.

The fairly compact machine is small enough to easily fit in the boot of your car, and can be carried across tennis courts easily. Its basket holds up to 100 balls, while the battery is rated to last for 4 hours. A replaceable battery system allows you to swap out packs to reduce downtime, but just in case you need to charge your Tenniix, it juices completely in about an hour.

This might be the first time tennis gets an AI makeover, but it isn’t T-APEX’s first AI rodeo.
