#Mets feel sting of the new extra-inning rule

The Mets’ first foray into MLB’s new extra-inning rules immediately came back to hurt them.

After Edwin Diaz blew a save in the ninth, Hunter Strickland took the mound to start the 10th inning with a runner already on second base. One single up the middle by Dansby Swanson was enough to put the Braves ahead, as they went on to beat the Mets 5-3.

“We saw it,” manager Luis Rojas said. “The game ended there in the 10th. It didn’t go any longer. We know that’s one of the reasons why we’re having it this season with everything around this type of season.

“We’ll keep getting used to it as we move forward.”

The Braves used the runner on second to jump-start their three-run rally, while the Mets fizzled out in the bottom of the inning.

They loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 10th for Eduardo Nunez, who had pinch-run for Yoenis Cespedes in the eighth. He flew out to shallow center field. Dominic Smith then pinch-hit for Andres Gimenez, who had entered as a defensive replacement for Robinson Cano in the eighth, and flew out to deep center field for a sacrifice fly that made it 5-3. But Wilson Ramos then grounded out to end the game.

“The guys kept swinging the bat well,” Rojas said.

Dellin Betances made his Mets debut in the eighth inning, pitching in a game for the first time since Sept. 15 of last season, when the then-Yankee tore his Achilles tendon. The Brooklyn native retired the first two Braves he faced before giving up a single to Austin Riley. Rojas then went to Justin Wilson for a left-on-left matchup against pinch-hitter Matt Adams.

Rojas said he liked what he saw from Betances, who was hitting 94-95 mph on his fastball.

The only run Steven Matz allowed came in the second inning when Adam Duvall took him deep for a solo home run. The opposite-field shot drilled a cardboard cutout of Jeff McNeil’s dog, Willow, which was one of three canines in the second row of the right-field seats.

Rojas officially named Michael Wacha as the Mets’ starter for Monday’s game against the Red Sox in Boston. He said Tuesday’s starter was still to be determined, though Corey Oswalt remains an option.

The Red Sox claimed left-hander Stephen Gonsalves off waivers from the Mets, who designated the 26-year-old for assignment Thursday after needing to open a spot on their 40-man roster.
