#The Batman Meets Barry Keoghan’s Joker in Unveiled Deleted Scene

“The Batman Meets Barry Keoghan’s Joker in Unveiled Deleted Scene”

The Batman meets The Joker in a newly released deleted scene from director Matt Reeves’ critically acclaimed DC movie. Unveiled by Twitter user The Batman Film News, Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight turns to Barry Keoghan’s latest iteration of the Clown Prince of Crime for help in apprehending the serial killer known as The Riddler. Anyway, that’s enough for now. We know you just want to see the scene, which you can below.

While we were given a very brief glimpse of Barry Keoghan as The Joker in the theatrical version of The Batman, his face remained hidden in shadow. This newly released deleted scene, and an image from The Batman’s official Twitter account, maintains much of the secrecy but still offers a far better look at what the Eternals star will look like as the infamous supervillain.

Clearly, Keoghan will be by far the most scarred version of the DC character. With his green-tinted hair thinning around an assortment of scars on his head, the Joker of The Batman universe is cursed with a permanent smile. Letting out small, familiar-sounding giggles, this is an early version of the Joker that will no doubt evolve as the franchise continues.

Barry Keoghan’s involvement in The Batman was surrounded by rumor and mystery, with many believing all along that he had been cast as The Joker alongside Pattinson’s Caped Crusader. Details of the deleted scene have since been revealed by director Matt Reeves, who was inspired by the character Hannibal Lecter and his relationship with Will Graham in the movie Manhunter. Thus, in the clip, Batman turns to the Joker for help, with the Arkham inmate revealing that he and the superhero have a history. “It’s almost our anniversary, isn’t it?” Joker says to Batman, before assisting him in creating a profile of The Riddler. Of course, Batman has no idea of the insidious presence with which he is speaking, and what The Joker will go on to become.

The Batman Version of The Joker Takes Inspiration from The Man Who Laughs

As we can now see from this recently released footage, the design of Barry Keoghan’s Joker will harken back to the earliest inspiration for the villain: the 1928 silent film The Man Who Laughs. The Batman director Matt Reeves has since explained why he feels that going back to this version of the character suits the latest version of the Joker best.

“What you’re seeing is a pre-Joker Joker, actually. We go back to the Conrad Veidt, The Man Who Laughs inspiration, which is a Bob Kane-Bill Finger reference,” Reeves explained. “Obviously, that guy has a congenital disease. He’s sort of like Phantom of the Opera, he can’t not smile. Instead of being like the story of the Elephant Man, where his grotesque outward appearance sort of belied the beautiful inside, this would form his nihilistic worldview and he would have an insidious understanding of human nature. That’s kind of where this psychology comes from in who this guy would be.”

Starring Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell, The Batman was released theatrically earlier this month and will become available to stream on HBO Max on April 19, 2022.
