#Japan Box Office: Kaguya-sama Final Debuts at No.1 with Moderate 164 Million Yen

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War Final, the second live-action film adaptation of Aka Akasaka’s romantic comedy manga was finally released in 319 theaters in Japan on August 20, 2021, then made a bit disappointing 164 million yen (1.49 million USD) on 124,500 admissions on its first Saturday and Sunday, which was only 52 percent of that of the first film released in 2019, but still enough to take the No.1 spot of the weekend box office ranking.

The 116-minute sequel film, in which Kanna Hashimoto and Sho Hirano reprise their roles as Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane, respectively, earned 252 million yen (2.29 million USD) on 1.95 million admissions in its first three days, Friday through Sunday, which was 55 percent of that of the first film. Based on the first week’s performance, the second film will probably end up grossing around one billion yen from its domestic run.

In its sixth weekend, Mamoru Hosoda’s Ryu to Sobakasu no Hime / BELLE earned 162 million yen (1.47 million USD) on 110,000 admissions and ranked third, one position down from the previous weekend. Its total gross has reached 5.2 billion yen (47.37 million USD) so far, and 650 million yen more is needed to be the director’s highest-grossing film by surpassing The Boy and The Beast (2015 /5.85 billion yen).

My Hero Academia THE MOVIE: World Heroes Mission, the third feature film in the My Hero Academia anime franchise, ranked fifth in its third weekend, two positions down from the previous weekend. The film has earned 2.06 billion yen (18.76 million USD) in total so far, and has already become the top-grossing film in the MHA anime franchise, surpassing the second film My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising (2019 / 1.79 billion yen).

The live-action film adaptation of Ken Wakui’s Tokyo Revengers manga ranked fifth in its seventh weekend, bringing its total to 3.84 billion yen (35 million USD).

Meanwhile, both of the two new anime films released last weekend, BanG Dream! FILM LIVE 2nd Stage and Kin-iro Mosaic Thank You!!, didn’t appear in the top 10 ranking.
