#Demon Slayer: Mugen Train Increases Japan Box Office Lead to More Than 37.70 Billion Yen

While it seems Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train may have slowed down a little as it approaches its 5th month in Japanese theaters, thanks to the announcement of a second TV anime season and the holidays, the Weekly Shonen Jump manga adaptation increased its weekend box office 24.7% over the prior weekend. Though due to State of Emergency restrictions still in place, the anime film’s weekday box office has dropped off dramatically.

This means that as usual, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has brought in another 300 million yen in its 19th week for a total of 37.70 Billion Yen (US$356.3 million) on the back of 27.45 million tickets sold. While this same seems small against the film’s earlier box office takings, most films in Japan struggle to make this much in their third or fourth weeks, and Demon Slayer isn’t currently doing any sort of giveaways or promotions. Cinemas in Japan are still limited to half seating measures as well as closing before 8 PM every day.

Worldwide, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train has increased its box office takings to US$397.3 million (41.98 billion yen) thanks to another strong week from South Korea, where the anime film totals US$6,444,984.00 on the back of 749,786 tickets sold.

This means that in US dollars, Mugen Train has passed Spirited Away as the highest-grossing anime film worldwide. But due to them both being Japanese films, and the difference between the USD and Japanese Yen from when Spirited Away was first released in 2001 to now, Mugen Train is still in second place against Spirited Away‘s mammoth 47.03 billion yen (US$395,580,000) worldwide box office takings. Mugen Train will be able to claim the top spot when the 2020 film passes the Hayao Miyazaki classic in Japanese yen.

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train opened in Japanese cinemas on October 16 and had the best opening weekend in Japanese cinema history, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japanese theaters ever. A 4DX version of the film was be released in Japan on December 26. You can read our review of the film here. The Ufotable-produced anime film continues to adapt the manga series by Koyoharu Gotouge, which saw a TV anime series adaptation in 2019. The film is scheduled to be released in the west in early 2021. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba TV anime series streamed on Crunchyroll as it aired. The second season of the TV anime series, subtitled “Entertainment District arc”, will premiere sometime in 2021 on Japanese TV.
