#New Rurouni Kenshin Anime Project Announced

Aniplex announced during Jump Fest 2022 that Rurouni Kenshin will get a new anime project produced by LIDEN FILMS (Tokyo Revengers). A small teaser preview video was released for the announcement. 

The new Rurouni Kenshin project is the latest anime since the 2012 Rurouni Kenshin: Shin Kyoto Hen OVA. There was previously a 1996 anime series, a 1997 movie, and two other OVAs in 1999 and 2001 respectively. 

The anime originate from the manga by Nobuhiro Watsuki, who was fined 200,000 yen (~US$1,760) in 2018 for simple possession of child pornography. The Rurouni Kenshin: Hokkaido Hen sequel manga, which began in 2017, was initially suspended by Shueisha, but the new series ultimately resumed publication and has six tankoubon volumes as of July 2021.

The original manga began in 1994 and ran until 1999. Over a decade later, the Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration manga, described by Amazon as a “condensed retelling… released in conjunction with a new live-action movie,” began in 2012 and ended in 2013. Watsuki later released Rurouni Kenshin Uramaku: Honoo wo Suberu in 2014.

The series has over 73 million copies in circulation worldwide. Warner Bros. Pictures released a live action movie adaptation in 2012. The fourth installment was recently released on April 23, 2021 in Japan and is available on Netflix.
