“Suzume Progresses Towards 10 Billion Yen Mark”

Makoto Shinkai‘s latest film Suzume has made 9.34 billion yen (~US$69.9 million) at the Japanese box office, making it the 54th highest-grossing film in the country so far.

During the weekend (December 17 to 18), the supernatural adventure title earned 414 million yen (~US$3.1 million) and once again placed second in the weekend ranking, putting it directly above James Cameron‘s newly debuted Avatar: The Way of Water.

Although Suzume is doing well, its cumulative earnings are currently behind predecessors Weathering With You and Your Name, which passed the 10 billion yen (~US$75.1 million) mark by their sixth week. In terms of the number of days, Oricon previously reported that Your Name and Weathering With You made 10 billion yen within 28 and 34 days respectively. Suzume made its 9.34 billion yen within 38 days.

Meanwhile, The First Slam Dunk remained at the top of the weekend ranking for the time in a row, with a score of 547 million yen (~US$4.1 million). Its total earnings are now 4.18 billion yen (~US$31.47 million).

Elsewhere on the weekend ranking, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond and One Piece Film Red dropped to sixth and ninth place respectively. Kaguya-sama: Love is War -The First Kiss That Never Ends-, which premiered on December 17, managed to place eighth in its first box office weekend.
