#Sony Shows Off PlayStation VR2 Headset and Controller Design

PlayStation VR2

Around this time last year, Sony revealed that a next generation PlayStation VR was in the works for PlayStation 5. Now, PlayStation’s Senior Vice President of Platform Experience Hideaki Nishino is here with a blog post to reveal the hardware design for the PlayStation VR2 headset and the updated Sense controller.

As you can see in the images, the PlayStation 5 hardware specifically inspired the look of the headset. Their goal was to create something that won’t just “become an attractive part of your living decor, but will also keep you immersed in your game world, to the point where you almost forget you are using a headset or controller.” To accomplish this they kept the first unit’s focus on balancing the weight of the headset and using a simple adjustable headband, making for a familiar final product.

New headset features include a lens adjustment dial, which will help users match the lens distance between their eyes, as well as a new built-in motor for headset feedback and a new vent design. Here’s Sony Interactive Entertainment Senior Art Director Yujin Morisawa on why this is his favorite part of the design:

“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow. Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games. I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation. I am really proud of how this turned out and the positive feedback I have gotten so far. I hope our PlayStation fans will also agree, and I can’t wait for them to try it out.”

You can find out more about the new hardware over at the PlayStation Blog. There’s no release date yet, but Sony promises a slimmer, lighter headset with a single cord setup for ease of use when it eventually arrives.
