The explosion sent a mushroom cloud high into the sky above the Lebanese capital, leveling much of the city’s port area, damaging some buildings and blowing out windows in others.
Before and after satellite images showed how the big boom changed the landscape of the city, flattening or severely damaging buildings, sinking several ships and wiping out large swaths of the waterfront.
Drone footage taken on Wednesday revealed the utter destruction of the port district from overhead, including tangled wreckage and burned-out cars strewn in the streets.
Other footage documents terrifying first-hand accounts, including of a bride who ran for her life amid her wedding photoshoot and a priest who was forced to do the same as debris came crashing down from the ceiling during a livestreamed mass.
A BBC journalist conducting a live interview on Tuesday was seen being thrown to the ground and screaming in horror after the deafening main blast.
One moving video captured a grandmother calmly playing “Auld Lang Syne” on the piano in her damaged home in the wake of the catastrophe.
The explosion is believed to have emanated from a 2,750-ton cache of ammonium nitrate — commonly used as a fertilizer — left to sit in a warehouse for some six years after it was confiscated from a Russian businessman, according to officials and reports.
The blast — which had the impact of 1,100 tons of TNT and the seismic force of a 3.3-magnitude earthquake — killed more than 135 people and injured thousands more.
