“#Sherpa climbs Mount Everest for record 25th time”
He’s at the peak of his career.
A Sherpa guide scaled Mount Everest for a record 25th time on Friday, breaking the previous record, which he had also set.
Kami Rita and 11 other Sherpas summited the mountain at around 6 p.m., a tourism official said, as reported by The Associated Press.
The group was this year’s first to reach the summit in 2021. They climbed the mountain to fix the route’s ropes so others can follow.
Rita first scaled the world’s highest mountain (elevation 29,032 feet) in 1994. His father was among the first Sherpa guides.
The Chinese-Nepalese border crosses the mountain’s summit. The mountain was closed on both sides last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nepal has granted climbing permits for 408 foreigners this year. China will allow “a few dozen,” who will be tested and must socially distance on the way up.
Rare windows of favorable weather each May offer climbers a chance to try to reach the peak.
