#Adam Gase haunted by biggest Jets failure: ‘Pisses me off’

Adam Gase can’t bring himself to check the Jets’ offensive rankings.

“There’s no point at looking at them,” the beleaguered coach said Wednesday. “I know where we’re at. It’s not good. We had way too many games where we were just so unproductive.”

The Jets enter what is surely Gase’s final game as the coach ranked No. 32 in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense. It is the second straight season under Gase that the Jets could finish dead last in total offense. They are averaging 275.3 yards and 15.3 points per game entering Sunday’s finale with the Patriots.

Gase made his reputation in the NFL coaching offense. He oversaw the historic 2013 Broncos offense, which broke numerous NFL records. The Jets hired him two years ago in part because they believed he could develop quarterback Sam Darnold and jump-start the offense. Instead, the offense has sputtered.

The Jets have gone 20 straight games without gaining 400 yards of offense, the longest active streak in the NFL. They have had four games this season where they did not score a touchdown and have not scored more than 28 points in a game this year.

The Jets are expected to fire Gase after Sunday’s game with the Patriots. After starting 0-13 this year, Gase’s crew has won its past two games, but even a three-game winning streak will not be enough to save his job. Gase was asked Wednesday if he worries the struggles on offense have damaged his reputation around the NFL.

“I don’t know if worry is really the right word,” Gase said. “It’s just … I mean it pisses me off. If there’s one side of the ball I want to make sure is right, it’s that one. It has not happened and that’s on me.”

This is not entirely Gase’s fault. Darnold has not played well at all this season. The Jets were without their projected starting wide receivers for the first half of the season. They have gone through eight different starting offensive line combinations. The signing of running back Le’Veon Bell in 2019 by former GM Mike Maccagnan was an unmitigated disaster that blew up in Gase’s face and led to the team cutting Bell in October.

Even with those factors, Gase has lacked solutions too often, and he will pay with his job. Gase did say Wednesday that a WFAN report that he has already been told he is being fired was incorrect.

“That was news to me,” Gase said. “No one has said that to me.”

Gase said he is not focusing on his job status even with all of the speculation swirling.

“I learned probably when I was 22 years old, Nick Saban told me you do your job until somebody tells you different,” Gase said. “That’s what I’m going to be focused on. My job is to get us ready to go this Sunday and try to win a game.”

Gase has gotten used to people asking about his job.

“That’s what it is,” Gase said. “I’ve been here two years, and I think that started about Week 6 last year.”

The Jets have played more efficient football lately, but it is hard to make up for the games early in the season when they were completely unproductive. They have failed to crack 300 total yards in 11 of their 15 games this season.

“I feel like we’ve done some things better in the last month or so,” Gase said. “We still had that Seattle game where we were just inept, couldn’t do anything. It’s those games where you just have absolutely nothing, no yards, no points, no third-down [conversions], red-zone percentage is crap. You have more than like two or three of those, it’s just going to be bad.”
